The first impression of a good German Shepherd Dog is that of a strong, agile, well muscled animal, alert and full of life. It is well balanced, with harmonious development of the forequarter and hindquarter. The dog is longer than tall, deep-bodied, and presents an outline of smooth curves rather than angles. It looks substantial and not spindly, giving the impression, both at rest and in motion, of muscular fitness and nimbleness without any look of clumsiness or soft living. The ideal dog is stamped with a look of quality and nobility – difficult to define, but unmistakable when present. Secondary sex characteristics are strongly marked, and every animal gives a definite impression of masculinity or femininity, according to its sex.

Long time Asheville kennel club member Michael Redfox has placed many titles on dogs in the conformation ring, but his passion is training working dogs for the real world.

Specifically training his line of Smokey Mountain German Shepherd Dogs in the serious business of Owner Protection, Search & Rescue, Explosive & Drug Detection and Service/Assist Dogs. Despite that intense training his dogs are also proven loving companion dogs… not always an easy trick…and it says a lot about his methods, attitude, and breeding discipline.

Located near Marshall NC the Smoky Mountain German Shepherds Kennel has had a strong brand name recognition for 30 years.

We are a low-cost provider and a Regional Monopoly as THE kennel that consistently produces fine German Shepherd Dogs. Our knowledge, experience, integrity, and service to our breed is widely recognized. We have dogs in 48 states and four continents.

Our goal since 1985 has been to find and produce fully functional German Shepherd Dogs.  Good looking dogs whose correct structure and size allow them to move with fluidity, balance, and strength. Dogs who readily partner-up to form a useful attractive team. Dependable, predictable, and reliable for the widest range of usefulness. No other animal in the Great Kingdom of Animals measures up to the varied usefulness of these incredible dogs.

Our long- term breeding strategy has been to focus on The Golden Middle rather than the extreme dogs one often sees on the Awards Platforms in the Performance and Conformation realms. We attempt to adhere closely to a written an accepted 2- page Breed Standard without the WOW! and FLASHBANG.

We like to tell folks that our dogs prove themselves every day in the Real World. Service Dogs, Search and Find IT Dogs, ALERT and Protection Dogs, Herding Dogs, ASSIST Dogs and ultimately Companion Dogs. Dogs you can live with. Dogs you can depend upon.

During 2013 eight clients called to let us know that their dogs from our breeding’s lived to be between 14 and 18 years of age! These were healthy functional family members. For our Kennel this is proof of our due diligence before we get to the whelping box. It is what sets us apart.

We are often able to turn around both troubled and seemingly unredeemable dogs. Salvage hopeless neglected, abused and in appropriately trained dogs.

We always have a rescue dog (usually a GSD) residing in the kennel, looking for a new forever home.

We offer inexpensive training and boarding for our clients. In addition, our dogs come with a lifetime Service and Guarantee contract.

Over the decades we have produced numerous dogs assisting disabled an abused people. We have provided trained dogs to protect mothers and children from “Crazed Ex’s”. One of our dogs gave his life sifting through hundreds of tons of drywall dust and building debris from the downed Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.

We are often called upon to perform Searches. We estimate over 100 successful Searches – usually after other Search Teams have tried and failed.
